In a bid to improve drinking water quality in Afghanistan, Aqua International Ventures Ltd have installed the first Meckow Aquapur Water Purification Unit into a community within Kandahar. The Meckow Aquapur has been connected to the local water supply which is unsuitable for human consumption. Once the filtration process has taken place through the unit all bacteria and contaminants such as E-coli, Cholera and Salmonella are removed. The community are now seeing the  health benefits of consuming Safe drinking water.

Afghanistan has a population of 22 million people of which only 13% have access to safe drinking water. Kandahar Province is particularly badly affected. The water levels of the River Arghandab, the main water source for Kandahar, have dropped significantly. Both drought and conflict have played significant parts in the damage of shallow wells and traditional "Karez" (underground water sources).
